The Filofax Circle of Life!

(Real Age has nothing to do with the following theory, it usually is over 2-3 years)

When I was new to Filofax, I just went crazy and kept buying new ones but as I have become a more Mature Filofaxer (I feel like there are life stages in the Filofax circle, but you end up back at the beginning at some point) I now only use one and have sold all that I originally bought.

I have realise today that there is a kind of life cycle to this so I thought I would blog about it and try and break down the life cycle so people can work out which stage of their Filofax life they are in and then they can see where they may be going (Disclaimer, this is not the same life path for everyone do not expect to go through the same things)

Baby Filofaxer (from when you first see Filofaxes up until you find Philofaxy)

This is the stage where you have only just heard about Filofaxes and you order your first one.

You go on to Google Filofax and what comes up? PHILOFAXY!!!!!

Young Filofaxer (from 2 months to roughly 1 year)

In your first year of Filofaxes you seem to become obsessed with finding that one perfect one, the one you want the one you crave, so you go crazy and any time you see one you slightly like you buy one and use it a bit then think something isn't working or you have faulty rings and just think this needs to go.

I used to buy one use it for two or three weeks, buy another (sometimes more), etc... I only ever used one at a time and quite often would change from A5 to Personal to Pocket to Personal but I always kept roughly 15 "in stock" on my shelf empty ready for use. But once I had used one once I would never really use it again (I can be strange like that I associate them with bad feelings etc and when something has gone wrong I kind of never want to use it again) I would buy a new one.

But when I would change I would move everything I had out and re write every single detail (I still practice this as I like fresh in a New Filofax unless it is work data I usually just use the same sheets) and this was so time consuming and life sucking, it was the most pointless exercise but I would not use a Filofax or more in until I was at that stage where everything I needed was there and re written and new!

During this first year I find you end up using so many different diaries and diary formats that you end up crazy, and never know what you have done, where you have done it etc, then you have a realising moment which brings you on to the next life style of Filofaxness.

Middle Age Filofaxer (from year 1.5 to 2.5 years, roughly)

When you reach this section you are more wanting to settle down, get comfy have a nice life with your partner (partner being the Filofax) so you go in search of the most perfect and keep the perfect but missing something’s in reserve ready to be used incase the next one you buy is not quite so perfect.

During this time you usually buy one Filofax every two months and move in and be like THIS IS THE ONE and then you realise no it isn’t and have to get a new one. You are thinking this must get easier, you start to write less down and try to just keep with something familiar, you still do not stay in one diary format or diary for a whole year. But all your important notes stay the same.

One thing you do find is that these perfect but missing something’s are kept in your top 5 and not use them but have them on the shelf looking pretty.

My Filofaxes during this time were:

A5 Adelphi in Black
Personal Amazona in Black
Personal Finchley in Vintage Rose
Pocket Zipped Malden in Purple
Slimline Adelphi in Scarlet

During this age period you also start to become overly obsessed with stickers, tape and post its, you may not use them but you buy them because “you may use them one day” and “omg they are so cute I must own them even if I never use them”.

Then comes the WORST stage in the Filofax life…………

MIDLIFE FILOFAX CRISIS!

During this stage you start to think Filofaxes are not for you, you try other ideas, Flex, Moleskine, bound diaries, but none work.

You start to not track anything, not really care not want to do anything.

You loose a part of your Filofax life and start to feel a bit all over the place as you do not know whether to carry on with the Filofax and grin and bear it or try and continue on finding a different idea?

This stage can happen at any time there is no timeline for Midlife Filofax Crisis unfortunately, it is not something you can gauge it will just come on one day.

Eventually you will start to make a try to get back in to it, but will it be too late.

Midlife Filofax Crisis is a well known condition, it is usually bought on by Ring Failures, loss of Filofax, damage of Filofax or just general issues. There is no way to avoid this part of your Filofax life I am sorry!

Mature Filofaxing (usually after 3 years)

You manage to stick to one Filofax and one Diary insert for a long time, you sell all your other Filofaxes and just have one. You feel content but something is still missing.

You either decide to buy a more expensive binder as this will be the one you stay with for all your life or you become a Young Filofaxer again and go back to your old ways.

No one knows why this happens to people or why they revert back to their old Filofax ways but one thing I do know is…..

Filofax people are the most supportive and lovely people you will ever meet! You are lucky your all in the same crazy boat with Philofaxy at the wheel we wont sink…. I hope!

So where are you in your Filofax life????

I am at the expensive binder section in Mature Life….

Week 3 - Filofax College, Downsizing - by Paperlovestory!

Here is a second lesson from the wonderful Paperlovestory she is today talking about Downsizing as compared to Upsizing last week  It has been wonderful having her guest post on my blog for the few days I have been away and unable to write for Filofax College!!! Her posts have been useful and also it has got other members of the Philofaxy community involved which is exciting! So here is her lesson! ENJOY!!! (It wont be the last time you will see her post on my blog)

Welcome to part II of the Upsizing and Downsizing lesson. Once again, thanks, Imy, for letting me do a 'lesson' for Filofax College :)

We will look at downsizing in a similar way to upsizing but we will concentrate a lot more on the logistics as downsizing is a slightly bigger job than upsizing!

So, firstly, why downsize?

Well, as explored in the upsizing lesson, the weight can get a bit much. Also, you might analyse your binder one day and realise that a lot of it you carry around isn't even looked at on a regular basis! Having pages that you don't necessarily need can mean that you're adding weight to your binder when you don't need to. Moreover, having larger rings can mean that you're seduced into cramming more into your Filofax whether or not you want to.

Another reason for downsizing could be because you're using pages with too much space. There are two ways to combat this though; either use diary inserts with a different layout or use a smaller binder.

With all that in mind, we will now have a look at the ways downsizing can be done.

Downsizing Ring Diameter

The first thing you have to be, if you're serious about this, is BE BRUTAL. You need to chop the things that are not used regularly enough to deserve their place in your binder. In order to do this, you must first look at what you need. Diary inserts are a given - but do you need a whole year in there? Could you potentially use two binders simultaneously? One that stays at home and another that goes everywhere with you? If so, the 'at home' one could hold the latter half of the year's inserts while your 'mobile' binder has inserts for the first six months of the year. You may need to do some planner admin every night or two, though.

Add other inserts you have looked at/used in the past two weeks. Put these together with the diary inserts. Now, consider if you need anything else. No? Well, measure how high these inserts are and that will give you can idea of the ring size you need.

Downsizing Binder Size

Again, this calls for a degree of brutality. A smaller binder size not only means limited writing space but also a decrease in ring size too (in most cases) so you need to take two things into account as opposed to just one if you're just downsizing the ring diameter.

Another thing that may be a deal breaker is the layout of card slots, zipped pockets, slip pockets, etc in other sized binders. With a smaller binder, you could potentially see a decrease in card slots and all these nifty extras that you may have found handy in your current organiser.

Real Life Case Studies

Angela (personal --> compact --> slimline)

Having started off using a personal sized organiser, I had no other size to compare the weight and paper real estate with. The personal size was working for me but it started to get heavier and heavier with each day as I added in sheets of info I thought I would need and things like that. And so, I opted to downsize to a compact - the Temperley Affair. This worked well for me but I found that adding in a Flex notebook meant that the weight was comparable to my personal (but still not as heavy). I liked the Compact size and was quite gutted when it had to go back due to a ring problem. Eventually, I took the plunge and downsized to a Slimline. This meant that I would be carrying less than half of what was in the personal!

I found that I had to be brutal but also compromise on what I was to carry. I went through all my info pages and clear envelopes that I carried in my personal and had a really close look at what I needed whenever I left the house. This led to the transfer of only one info sheet! And because of the limited rings, I had to compromise on the diary pages and I only have nine months of 'week on two pages' inserts in there now. I managed to cram in two notepaper sheets (as opposed to about 20 in my personal!), three to-do sheets and a few blog planning sheets too.

Although it can be daunting to be so brutal, the fact that I now carry something less than half of the weight of my personal has definitely been beneficial for my shoulders (as I carry my organiser in my handbag!).

Josh  @JoshuaLaPorte on Twitter, his blog and his Youtube

The problem, for me at least (with the A5, link here to upsizing), was that this binder failed to be portable, and I found I didn’t have it with me when I needed it. In addition, the huge amount of space plus the large page size allowed me to develop bad habits relating to inefficient use of space. I would have a whole page with only a few words written on; I’d keep obsolete information in the binder. I had huge numbers of forward diary with nothing entered on yet. In the meantime, the fact that the binder sat on my desk so often made it practically useless.

So I downsized back into my Cavendish. But I’ve found that I was using diary pages rather inefficiently. Many days would only have approximately 50-60% of the page area filled with notes. Because the binder options with 30mm rings are so rare, I decided to try fitting into a 23mm ringed personal size binder again. If I can make this size work, there is a large selection of new and vintage binders which I can use. The smaller ring size forces me to be more economical with my use of paper and space within the planner, which I feel reinforces good habits.

To this end, I looked through my planner to find poorly utilized inserts. The culprit was most certainly the day on two pages diary setup. Not only is this setup very paper heavy, it can make forward planning difficult due to the very granular “view” offered of only seeing one day at a time. The diary also included month views but I did not consult these much except when scheduling appointments. I’ve recently implemented a new setup based on a Cotton Cream Week-on-two-pages diary with extra notes pages leaved between the week views to capture notes and to-do items. This change, plus relocating my wallet contents to a wallet, allowed me to easily fit into a 23mm Domino personal size binder. I find the smaller size and lighter weight to be pleasant changes and I’ve not noticed any issues with lacking space to write things. As with any planner setup change, there is a learning curve during which you need to figure out how to work with the new setup. This process seems to be moving smoothly.

Jotje

So, Angela asked me to write a few lines about my various Filofax-size changes. My first ever Filofax – bought back in 2010 – was an A5 pink Finsbury. A rather natural choice, because I have used TimeSystem planners for many years in my workplace (back when I was employed), and the T/S was also A5 size. Then, and this won’t need further explanation, the Filofax bug bit me. Bit me hard. And I started buying more Filofaxes, also in Personal size. And soon came the day when I felt sorry for the unused (or “underused”) beautiful Filofaxes I had, and I started thinking couldn’t my Work and Personal Life fit in a Personal binder? And that’s what I did, I changed it all over to Personal. I even wrote a guest post on Philofaxy about it, you might remember the 2PPD inserts in the bright red Malden.

At the same time I was using a Pocket Filofax as my wallet. And – just when things went a bit calmer workwise – I wondered if I could downsize even one step further – into a Pocket Filofax. And, that’s what I did! I used 1DPP inserts , together with weekly and monthly pages. And it even doubled as my Wallet! This resulted in yet another guest post, this time in my Vintage Pink Pocket Malden.

Unfortunately, when my work load picked up again, the Pocket turned out all too tiny. So, back to Personal I went. Then we launched a huge project and after having missed some vital deadlines/information, I returned to my old trusty 2PPD in my A5 Filofax. This time in my A5 Vintage Pink Malden, which I had bought used from ebay.

Will I stay in A5 forever? Nah, probably not. It all depends on how work is developing. Calm times will make me crave a smaller Filofax (I expect to be bitten by the bug again come Christmas), and busy times (beware February ...!) will make me upsize again.

To be honest: I can totally live with that!

One piece of advice though: do not attempt to rewrite the past months (or even year) in the new size. That’s really a total unnecessary waste of time. I just put ALL inserts of a full year in a large IKEA DVD box, label it with the year number and be done with it.

Homework

Ok, so I am only human. I have limited experience in up and downsizing so I may have missed some excellent points! To combat this, the homework is to Filofaximy@live.com email in some of your own tips you may have accrued from your own up or downsizing experience. The best tips will be featured in a blog post and there *may* also be prizes :)

ALL STARS GUEST POST - DELIGTED - Her Pen Collectipon

Here is a guest post as part of the Philofaxy All Stars Tour from Femke from Delighted, I recently posted a What's in my bag post for the tour on her blog!

I remember I used to use those Uni Ball Fusion pens at school, and the ink looked clear but it was really pigmented and they were so cute, those and my Parker pen were by far my favorite school pens, I just searched on Cult Pens but they no longer sell them! Thank you for reminding me of them!

Thank you

My Pen Collection.

I’m addicted to pens! As a stationary lover, pens are part of my collection too and here are some of my favorite pens :)
This is how I store the pens on my desk.

First up: My lamy. After hearing the Filofax crowd rave about this pen, I decided to try it myself. I like it, but I don’t love it.

These are my absolute favorite pens: Pilot Frictions. I use them in my planner only. I adore them.

I’m a Pilot-aholic. I love their pens and these are gorgeous too. The two on the right are so cute, the writing is light and the two on the left are used only in my journal.

These are just regular pens, just the printing on them is so cute.

The only Sharpie I own, a real Marc Jacobs one. Of course.

I hope you enjoyed this bit of my pen collections! And thanks Imy for letting me post on your blog!

City Organiser - Philofaxy Meet up HAUL!!!

I went to look at 3 Filofaxes that were purple...

The Aston
The Malden
The Osterley

IMG_3024

Here is me looking at them....

I thought about it for a while and decided that the Aston WAS NOT FOR ME! It was like the Finchley but a strange colour and just generally not for me. That went straight back on the shelf and downstairs went....

Tracy, Me, Malden, Osterley & Holborn...

I looked at them for ages and made a decision....

I also did buy diary inserts.... 2 Days to a Page and Month to View... my standard layout, I have used it on and off for two years now, so that kind of proves it is the format that works best for me!

Here is what I bought...

Untitled

It comes in a box, so you already know what it is.

The reason is the Malden had a weird stiff back, it would not lay flat even if you tried to teach it, it was just as if there was something to reinforce it and stop it laying like a Malden should, I looked at a lot of them before I decided....

IMG_3032

I inspected them all to find the most "perfect" one for me.. but it was just too stiff...

What is left then?? Of course..... THE OSTERLEY!!!!!

Untitled

Shela for those who want to know her name!

I have officially moved in.

We were also given the opportunity to choose something out of a box of different stationery items!

I chose a Giraffe Ruler!!!

Philofaxy Meet up - September 2012

I went to the Philofaxy Meet up last weekend as you all know!

I didn't take any photos though, which was rubbish, so the AMAZING Steve from Philofaxy agreed to let me use some of his on my blog! THANK YOU STEVE!!!! You are actually the best!

I left home at 5:00am, which was a shock to the system (only because of the cold) and I made my way out to my car, it was seriously cold. I started to drive along and as I got out of my village it looked as though there was frost everywhere! That shows how cold it was!

I got to my grandparents at 5:30am so I could park my car and walk to the train station, I am so glad I decided to park down there, but as I was reversing my foot wouldn't stop shaking, was very annoying, was so surprised that I kept the clutch still and didn't hit a wall or anything.

On my walk to the station I noticed the police had taped off the park....

Untitled

All it made me think of was... Waynes World.... as the stairs up to it you could not use... "Stairway denied"  you know that bit when he is trying to play the guitar of his dreams and he plays Stairway to Heaven and there is a sign saying that you can't play it.... (sorry about that little ramble)

I arrived at the station far too early and look how quiet it was...

Untitled

It looks like midnight doesn't it!

Well I sat there for a while then there was an announcement....

"The 6:34am train to Plymouth has been canceled due to not enough train staff, please find an alternative route"

I thought SHIT how am I going to get there, I will drive if I have too!

A few seconds later another announcement...

"The next train at platform 2 will be the 7:55am train to Edinburgh, calling at........................."

I was hoping she was going to say it would be in 5 minutes or something,  so I saw a train conductor, he told me the train was at Par and he would get a taxi for me to get there on time!

This was kind of silly when via train it is a 5 minute journey, but by car it is a 15 minute one.....all they had to do was drive the train to the station before... when St Austell is a main station and Par is just one in the middle of nowhere!

I finally got on the train and took my "photo of the day" for the Everyday app...

Untitled

I had a whole carriage to myself most of the way, then I got to Plymouth ON TIME!!! Pretty amazing considering!

I was in first class from here on out, I was expecting it to be cosy and warm... but it wasn't!

Untitled

I had my PS Vita with me and the new Little Big Planet to play so I didn't mind that I would be stuck on a train for 4.5 hours!

Untitled

Most exciting game ever.....

I got to Paddington and met Preethi by Paddington bear outside the doughnut shop, and we traveled together to the meet up! Thank you Preethi!!!!

When we arrived at the Tate everyone was waiting outside, we all said hello hugged and went in for our lunch, we sat down and within 5 minutes people started to get their Filofaxes out, I was so excited to get ordering food as I was starting!

Tracy had her bottle of wine and we were all happy!

Untitled

Preethi, Christa and my food took forever to arrive, everyone had finished their meals by the time we got there NOT IMPRESSED TATE MODERN CAFE 2... you usually have such good service!

I eventually ate my fish and chips and we all moved around and looked in each others Filofaxes to make the most of it!

(There will just be alot of pictures now... then some more story between)

We finally had a huge group shot outside!!!

Unfortunately as Steve is the photographer he cannot be in the photo... sorry

We went for a walk around London to visit some of the main stationery shops before going back for dinner at Valipino, we went to Artbox, Muji and Paperchase! I spent far too much money..... posts to come!

IMG_3044

IMG_3045

After waking up at 4am you can really see the tiredness setting in on me here!

The next day we had breakfast with Steve and lunch with Steve, Maudie from Maudie Made on Etsy, Thomas, and Philip Steves son...

Did you notice Steve could not get rid of me and Tracy all weekend, poor guy!!!

Thank you for organising another amazing trip!!! I really enjoyed every minute!!!!

Steve you deserve a crown, but we already proved you wont wear one so there isn't much point! hehe..... until next time....
